Hangouts is an instant messenger by Google LLC. The app is designed to let you exchange text and media messages with individuals and groups of people via the internet. The app is available for free and doesn’t limit your communication with other users. It’s a convenient alternative to other messaging systems, but is it the one that will solve your problems? Let’s see.
Design and Usability – 5/5
Google mobile interfaces are always quite attractive and easy to use. Hangouts UI is not an exclusion. The app has a clear chat feed that lets you switch between conversations quickly. The chat menu includes a few buttons for adding media to your messages. To navigate between the feed and conversations, you can simply tap on the needed threads and swipe right to go back to the feed. The settings menu is available via the hidden menu bar on the left. Tap the tree-lines icon to reveal it.
Key Functions – 4/5
Using Hangouts, you can not only send text messages but also share various media files, including pictures, videos, instant photos, emojis, GIF animation, stickers, and your current location marker on Google Maps. The size of attachable files is limited to 200MB, which is quite enough in most cases. If you need to share something larger, you can share Google Drive links directly and attach absolutely any file type.
If you want to use this messenger for business purposes, you can create group chats for up to 150 participants. This makes Hangouts a convenient free instrument for remote business tasking. On the other hand, such a limit can be too low for medium and big companies. You can also use the app to make group audio and video calls with up to 10 other users. It’s a good way to communicate when you’re far from your family or business partners.
Security – 5/5
The app is perfectly protected from data breaches. Google uses end-to-end encryption, which makes it impossible to decipher intercepted conversations. Given that your messenger cannot be breached, you can use it for any purpose. However, we recommend you to set an additional password for the app if you worry that someone can steal it to get your data.
