Skype - free IM & video calls review
Skype - free IM & video calls is a cross-platform messenger application by Microsoft. It’s designed to provide you with professional-level communicational features, including unlimited file sharing, messaging, and group video calls. Skype has been one of the leading apps in the category for over 15 years already. Let’s see if it’s still good.
Design and Usability – 4/5
The mobile version of Skype is a little bit cumbersome. It’s hard to tell what’s the real problem, but navigating skype isn’t as quick as, say, Whatsapp. On the other hand, this app offers more features for you to use. It’s also quite easy to learn how to use this app, independently from your user level.
Key Functions – 5/5
Skype offers a highly flexible functionary. The primary feature is video and audio calls. You can use it to talk up to 24 people simultaneously for hours in a row, independently from the device you are using. At the same time, you can share files of any extension, but the file size is limited to 300MB. If you need to send larger files, you can share direct links to cloud directories on Google Drive, iCloud, Dropbox, and other popular free cloud drive services. While texting in the chat, you can also share images, videos, stickers, and emojis. If you need to show more to others, you can share your device screen and demonstrate anything you want. The app is also connected to the Giphy GIF library, which makes it easy to add hundreds of unique GIFs to the conversation. If you don’t have time to talk or typing messages is to time-taking at the moment, try sending 1-minute voice messages to keep communicating no matter what.
VoIP features let you make direct calls on cellular phones all around the world, even if they’re not connected to the Internet. You can also send and receive SMS messages from the VoIP network or from your phone’s SMS box.
Security – 5/5
Skype hasn’t been spotted for user data leaks over the years, so it’s considered one of the safest apps in the category. You can use it for both business and personal needs for free and without limitations unless you need access to VoIP features.
